Catwalk Class 1

Well done everyone on completing your FIRST catwalk class! Here is your individual catwalk critique on the sequence movements of your walk.

We believe learning from each other is a vital tool. We call this method of teaching ‘teaching students: teaching each other’. This method has been proven to reinforce one’s own learning by viewing someone else who has mastered a technique (allowing you to then replicate it at home).

Practicing is vital to your learning. If you do not practice you will repeat the same mistakes in your second class… or worse.. into your third class. Which stops you from building on-top of your skills, consecutively throughout the classes. Catwalk is about learning your body and becoming aware of your movements / expressions – which are then used in editorial training and photo shoots. By not practicing you will be hindering your learning not just for catwalk but also editorial, as the same basic principles of body and expression apply.

Some common things we notice you were all having difficulties with in this class:
Hands: a great tip is to clench your hands tightly and then let them loose, your fingers will naturally curl into a soft position (this is how your hands should look on the runway.
Arms: if you have the dreaded shopping bag arms (one is perfect and the other one swings too much,) grab two full water bottles and practice walking with them. The weight of the water bottles will restrict your arms from swinging too much but will also let them swing a little bit; which is what you want!
Quarter turn: Some of you pose after pivoting, but this is a non-stopping technique – just a sharp turn and continue walking.
Posing: Please start practicing holding your pose still for 3 seconds. For the second class we want to see more of you walking to the end of the runway and hold your pose (counting 1,001, 1,002,1,003).

Posture – Your posture is good, but to make it more runway push your hips forward and lean back. Practice head control to stop it from moving side to side when walking. Also, make sure not to look down at the floor when you are entering the runway.
Arms – Your arms sway too much past your body, instead of swaying up and down they should be swaying side to side behind your body. Once you correct the runway posture with your hips more forward, drop your shoulders and your arms will naturally fall behind your body. You can also practice walking with 2 full water bottles, one in each hand. This will help equally weigh down the arms and minimise the extra movement.
Feet – Your feet placement is great, well done. Just remember to always walk in the middle of the runway when you are the only model on the runway.
Poses – You need to work on holding your poses a little bit longer. Try counting 1001, 1002, 1003 when posing.
¼ turn – Very good, sharp exit turn.
