As the modelling industry becomes more and more diverse, the agencies are expanding their divisions and more often the industry standards are being overlooked. So where do you see yourself fitting in the modelling industry?
When looking for representation, make sure you research the agency thoroughly. See what models they represent, what clients they work with and whether you will be a complimentary fit.
Every agency has their own look and size, however just because you may not meet the industry standard doesn’t mean you can’t, or won’t, be a successful model. Look at Kate Moss, undoubtedly smaller than her agency height at 170cm (5’7”) yet she is the face of Vogue and on all the famous runways.
Needless to say, save yourself the heartache and don’t go in without knowing the agencies’ requirements! If they specify a requirement and you are not a fit, then move on to the next agent that is looking for you! The general rule of thumb for most agencies is:
For fashion, females are usually:
Minimum height of 5’8” / 173 cm (size 8) to 5’11” / 180 cm (size 10)
For fashion, men are usually:
Minimum height of 6’2” / 188 cm (40 – 42 suit size & are a smaller build) to 6’3” / 190 cm and 76cm to 81cm (30” to 32”) waist
Men have a small height gap to work with as many designers want a standard size (so they don’t need to worry about your pants coming halfway between your knees and your ankles!).
There have been a lot of models that have dominated this industry who weren’t in this size bracket, but they perfected their walk and poses and made themselves something special – this is why we say, practice, practice, practice!
