Our founder reflects on Melbourne Fashion Week, the diversity on the runway, and what it means for aspiring models in Australia.
Last week was a huge week for the Melbourne modelling and fashion scene, with Melbourne Fashion Week (M/FW) taking over the city. Whether you were at the shows or following along online, one thing stood out: the diversity of models on the runway.
A runway that made room for everyone
M/FW showed us models of different ages, heights, sizes, ethnicities and abilities, including a number of models in wheelchairs. For me, the most admirable part was that every one of them walked with a beautiful, strong runway walk. Presence, posture and purpose were on display no matter who was on the catwalk.
Behind the scenes at M/FW
I was lucky enough to be part of one of the fashion shows this year, choreographing the runway. Even better, many of our graduated models from the Australian Academy of Modelling took part. Watching our graduates walk with confidence in front of an audience was a proud moment, and a reminder of why I do what I do.
What this means for aspiring models
The industry is making room for more people than ever. If you’ve ever talked yourself out of modelling because you didn’t fit a certain look, it’s worth asking whether that’s still true. We all have insecurities, and that’s part of being human. Challenging them is how we grow, and it’s often the first step towards a goal you care about.
Modelling isn’t only about one particular look. It’s about your presence, confidence, skills, personality and drive.
Model training that goes beyond the walk
This is exactly why our Comprehensive Model Course in Melbourne focuses on more than posing and walking. It takes a holistic approach to the modelling industry, covering all facets of the business, with a strong focus on personal development and confidence building. It’s the training that helped prepare our graduates for the runway.
